Sir Walter Raleigh's Background

Sir Walter Raleigh was born January 22 1552 or 1554 in Hayes Barton in Devonshire, England. His Father was a farmer, and his half brother is Sir Humphrey Gilbert. He is also related to Sir Francis Drake and Sir Richard Grenville. Sir Walter Raleigh went to Oriel College in Oxford. He was a poet, courtier, privateer, and an explorer. He hated Catholic Churches.

Exploration and Arrival

Sir Walter Raleigh sailed for England in June 1584. His Career lasted from 1584 to 1618. After he set sail toward America he arrived in Roanoke Island, North Carolina.
Sir Walter Raleigh Sent over men from England to explore the coast of America. Queen Elizabeth named the place they visited Virginia. Sir Walter Raleigh Sent over immigrants These immigrants sent him two plants, The potato and tobacco.Great Britain and Ireland loved these two plants. Sir Walter Raleigh's settlement failed, but what he did led other Englishman to copy him.

Why is Sir Walter Raleigh Famous?

He is famous because he helped bring people to the ''new world'', and he established the Virginia Colony of Roanoke Island.Today we have a city named after Sir Walter Raleigh, Raleigh, North Carolina. In 1618 London's king accused him of disobeying because he fought with the Spanish. He was commended death and Beheaded.
