http://www.yesnet.yk.ca/schools/projects/renaissance/columbus.html Explorer's Background Christopher Columbus was probably born in The republic of Genoa, Italy, around 1451. His real name was Christoforo Clumbo. His wife, Portuguese women who he married around 1480, was Felipa e Moniz. They had one son named Diego. He made his first voyage in 1476 into the Atlantic Ocean. He first went to sea when he was a teenager he was 14 years old. He was 55 years old when he died at sea.
Exploration and Purpose
Columbus wanted to find a new route to the Far East, to India, China, Japan and the Spice Islands. If he could reach these lands, he would be able to bring back rich cargoes of silks and spices. Columbus knew that the world was round and realized that by sailing west, instead of east around the coast of Africa, as other explorers at the time were doing, he would still reach the East and the rich Spice Islands. Columbus thought that by sailing west he would find a quicker and easier route to the East. He thought that the earth was smaller than it is, and like all other Europeans at that time, he did not know about the existence of America.
Arrival Point Columbus thought he was pioneering a back way to China or Japan - he thought the world was much smaller than it is. He ended up in what is now called the Bahamas on his first voyage.
Explorer's Contribution Christopher Columbus is one of the best-known of all explorers. He is famous for his voyage in 1492, when he "discovered" America while he was looking for a way to sail to Asia.
